On a picturesque farm in the Norwegian forest, the Payne family – British father Nik, Norwegian mother Maria and their four children – have thrived for years in isolation from the modern world, determined to maintain their sustainable-living independence in harmony with nature. But when tragedy strikes, the family faces a devastating loss, along with the daunting prospect of integrating themselves into contemporary society. Winner of Sundance’s World Cinema Grand Jury Prize for Documentary, the film is a poignant encounter with a family coming to terms with a new reality.
“Intimate…stirring…a reminder that you don’t need sensationalism to deliver something that’s honest and emotionally resonant.” – The Hollywood Reporter
“Aching emotional candor and continued visual beauty…It’s hard to say how interesting or idealized the film [director] Jacobsen first conceived would have wound up being; it’s unlikely to have been as affecting as this one, which probes gently but insistently into fragile family dynamics.” – Variety
“Bittersweet…a gentle, intimate portrait…nature has a way of healing itself, so it is apt that this documentary chronicles that same cycle of renewal and growth.” – Screen Daily
