Cromwell’s mixed media compositions explore themes of spatial dynamics through contrasting layers of shape, color, and pattern. Using processes both additive and subtractive the artworks are worked and reworked leaving a rich mark-making context in the final composition. Trajectories of line reflect wayfinding, restless wandering, and the need to find order or meaning.

Artist Statement

Carefully chosen color, transparent or opaque, floats or recedes, changing the two-dimensional surface of the painting into an environment of its own. The viewer sometimes finds themselves observing spatial compositions that reference both the micro and the macro within the whole. Cromwell’s love of the natural world, and her experiences in the design and architecture professions, inform and influence her work.

Artist Bio

Heather Cromwell is a visual artist working in mixed media. Cromwell has exhibited her artwork in group exhibitions at the Museum of Northwest Art in Washington, and at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, as well as locally in Bozeman. Her landscape drawings, paintings and pastels have been published in books. Cromwell practiced as an architect in Bozeman and Seattle– and spent her early career years in New York City as a graphic designer– before becoming an artist. She earned a BFA from Pratt Institute in NY, and a MS in Architecture from the University of Washington in Seattle.
