Our Perspectives: Art Right Now

Group Show Featuring Area High School Students

Our Perspectives: Art Right Now is the Emerson’s first juried High School student exhibition! It is our great pleasure to showcase the creative talents of 41 students from 6 schools around southwest Montana. Bozeman, Belgrade, Ennis, Gardiner, Manhattan and Manhattan Christian High Schools are all represented in this show.

About the Work

This exhibit was inspired by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards’ Art.Write.Now.Tour that the Emerson was honored to host preceding this exhibit. The Art.Write.Now.Tour featured work of student artists, grades 7 – 12, from around the nation who have been awarded for their excellence in fine art and writing. Hundreds of thousands of submissions are received each year, and around 2,500 students are given national recognition and scholarships. Each year, this program receives very minimal participation from Montana students. Many community members were unaware the organization existed prior to the show landing in Bozeman.

In an effort to inform Montana’s youth and community about the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards as well as other opportunities for exhibition we decided to put out a call for art of our own. 83 students submitted 149 works of art in a variety of mediums. For many students, this was the first time that they submitted to a juried exhibit. The number and caliber of the submissions is a testament to the high standards set in art classrooms around the state, and it made the jurying process challenging. It is the Emerson’s mission to support artists at any age, and we feel very honored to have been a part of the process.
